Possible Causes:

1. Print cartridge is out of toner or running low.
2. Print cartridge is damaged or defective.
3. Incorrect printer settings are being used.

Now that you know what might be the problem, here are some troubleshooting steps to try before taking the printer in to be fixed, or having to buy a new one.

Troubleshooting Steps:

Step 1: Check Status of Toner Cartridge:

1. While the printer is in “Ready” state, press the Menu button.
2. Press the down arrow and select “Reports.”
3. Press the down arrow and select “Device Statistics.”
4. On the Device Statistics report, look for the Supply Information heading. Confirm the status of the “Black Toner.”

If the cartridge is low on toner, then you will need to replace it. If you cannot replace it immediately, gently shake the cartridge side to side to evenly distribute the remaining toner inside the cartridge. If the cartridge is OK, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Check Media Type Settings:

If you are printing on any kind of special media (labels, cardstock, or anything other than plain white paper), you need to make sure the correct media type is set. Depending on the media, the printer will change the speed of the media feeder, temperature of the fuser, and toner transfer rate function properly. Follow these steps to check the media type settings:

1. While the printer is in “Ready” state, press the Menu button.
2. Select “Paper Menu.”
3. Select “Paper Size/Type.”
4. Select the correct Tray you are using for the special media.
5. Confirm or select the paper size.
6. Confirm or select the paper type.

Do a few test prints and observe the results. If it is still light or faded, proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Check Toner Darkness Settings:

1. While the printer is in “Ready” state, press the Menu button.
2. Select “Settings.”
3. Select “Quality Menu.”
4. Select “Toner Darkness.”
5. If the level is less than 8 (default), then increase the value.
6. Submit changes.

Do a few test prints and observe the results. If you followed the steps above and are still getting light print, then we recommend contacting Lexmark Customer Service or an authorized Lexmark service provider.
